Electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) are gaining increasing importance as a key tool for the structured documentation of the planning, execution, and analysis of scientific work. They are an essential component of sustainable and quality-assured RDM—particularly in the natural and engineering sciences, but also in a wide range of other disciplines.

The ELN Interest Group (IG ELN) within FDM.SH serves as a platform for exchange and networking. Its core focus is the sharing of experiences, knowledge, and best practices related to the implementation, operation, and use of electronic lab notebooks across institutions in the state.

Within this exchange, the group addresses, among other topics:

  • Selection, implementation, and hosting of ELN solutions
  • Onboarding and training of users
  • User group and access rights management
  • Development and sharing of workflows and best practices
  • Integration of ELNs into existing RDM structures
  • Use of ELNs in teaching

The group thrives on open exchange and the sharing of practical experience. Its aim is to learn from one another, leverage synergies, and jointly develop orientation in a dynamic field.

Anyone interested in ELNs is welcome to join—regardless of whether concrete solutions are already in place or initial considerations are just beginning. We welcome all who wish to contribute their perspectives and actively shape the exchange.
